Visited Juniors on Tuesday, 12/28/2021 at 6:00 pm with my daughter Teria, granddaughters Skye & Cherokee and great-granddaughter Jet who were visiting from California.  After checking out vaccination card and ID we were seated after around a 20 minute wait.

I ordered cole slaw ($3) to go along with my cheeseburger that came with lettuce, tomatoes and sauteed onions and steak fries on an oven toasted bun.  Juniors advertised that it is a steak burger but it's listed on the menu as a cheeseburger.  What I will say is that you can tell it is an actual steak which was juicy, tender and so well seasoned.  I could not finish it all.  But  my stomach was saying "go for the fruit cheesecake topped with blueberry compote, no the vanilla malt, no no, order the banana split, wait, no order the strawberry fruitcake".  Well as you can see what won out.  The cheesecake was so smooth and creamy, and the blueberry compote was not overly sweet.  I gave it my best, but my eyes were bigger than my stomach.  So, I had to walk away and leave just a few forks full.  Darn.  Cherokee's banana split was so good.  Next.

Now for a bit of Junior's history if you don't mind.  The original Junor's was founded by Harry Rosen in 1950 on Flatbush and DeKalb Avenues in Brooklyn (still in business) and is a landmark restaurant known as the home of New York's best cheesecake.  The second generation, Marvin and Walter took over the restaurant.  As of today, Walter's sons, Alan and Kevin remain at the helm.

Stop at any of their locations.  The customer service is great and the atmosphere is always vibrant.  My next dish will be the pastrami.  Tasted it, so so so good.

Grandma's pizza - $4.00

Koronet's Pizza has been around for a very long time, well known for making very large slides.  You do have the choice of selecting a regular or large slice.  Since this is in the Columbia University area, I see a lot of students ordering the large... why not.

Just because the slice is large doesn't mean it has no taste.  Far from it.

Grandma's pizza crust is tender and the pizza itself is so good.  From the crust to the basil leaves on top, you savor every bite.  You taste the sauce, garlic, mozzarella, the sauce (yum).

But let's talk about Grandma pizza.  Why call it Grandma?

There are different but similar variations of where the name came from.  What is well known is that it is a Sicilian-style pie that originated in Long Island New York during 1970.  As first generation Italian immigrants, the women were likely trying to recreate a pie they remembered from their home country with ingredients they had on hand and something you would get if you were invited to someone's home. It has a thin crust, cooked in an olive-oil coated rectangular pan and topped with mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce and it's cooked in a square pan.  The sauce is usually layered over the cheese and not the other way around, then cut into square pieces.  Sounds familiar?  Grandma pizza is usually made without a pizza oven.  And it was usually only made inside the home.

Enjoy.
