Teriyaki chicken, steam fried rice & cabbage

Monday, November 7, 2022 @12:00 pm

I worked in the Bronx for 4 days and one of the perks was seeing my old co-workers who are like family and getting to see my co-worker Altagracia who was recently working with me in Manhattan but for the past two months was transitioned from back to the Bronx.  So off we went to have lunch at Teriyaki One.  It’s new because I would have been there when I worked in the Bronx, but I’m glad that they are there now.  Good thing we got there early because the line just kept growing.  You watch the chefs work the grill as it is stationed behind this long counter, and it’s opened.  Everything is fresh because the chefs are constantly moving, shifting, chopping, scooping and plating.

Altagracia and I both had the chicken teriyaki special with steamed white rice and cabbage.  Now listen, they give you so much food!  And just because it’s a lot and tastes good, I tried to finish it all, clean my plate, leave nothing behind.  Didn’t happen.  I gave it the good old college try.  So good.

I went back to work and thought about the experience.  Clean, spacious and airy.  The food is  well seasoned, chicken well done and tender and juicy.  Have fun and let me know if you were able to eat all of your food.  Go ahead I dare you.

What a great time, celebrating eating with my daughter Stacey and her daughter, my granddaughter Alana.  Alana picked this restaurant so off we went.

I’ll say this, this is one of the most customer friendly service restaurant that I have been to that starts from the time you walk in.  Our server, Ms. Azzura was exceptionally proficient, helpful, knowledgeable and friendly.  I asked her what does her name mean and she did not know except her grandfather named her.  How precious.

Well Alana ordered the soy garlic drumsticks, and they look like they were weight lifting for a contest, just huge, the biggest I have ever seen.  She also ordered the house fried rice, plain.  Now that was yummy to my tummy.  I kept scooping her rice on my plate ONLY because she invited me to and she still had a lot enough to take out.  Ummmm, I didn’t take enough.

Stacey and I order the soy garlic wings and I had a side of coleslaw.  Stacey ordered the chicken fried rice.  The wings are so full of flavor and tasty with a nice bite to it.

Mr. Susanto NNG the general manger came over and introduced himself and left off that he was hilarious.  So down to earth like Azzura.  They make for a good team, with good food and great atmosphere.

So stop on by and say hello.  By the way Bonchon’s are individually owned, so head to 23rd street.

Chicken & broccoli - $27.00

Lobster spring rolls - $23.00

Scallion pancakes - $14.00

Tuesday, November 1, 2022 @ 4:40 pm

Down by Riverside sits a 1920 red brick commercial building which now house Panda Harlem restaurant.  On this fine day, my daughter Brandy decided that I should try this restaurant since she has been here recently.  So off we went.

As you can see it is dimly lit, spacious with a little quirks of seating areas like the one near the entrance, or the two tables that are near the main bar or the upper seating area.  As we were seated and introduced to our server Jay, we began to view the menu.

We order the scallion pancakes for appetizers and oh my so good.  The hoisin sauce topped it off.  I could have eaten them without the meal.  But onwards I must.

We ordered the chicken & broccoli and lobster spring rolls for the main meal and they both were good.  The broccoli had a nice crunch even in the brown garlic sauce.  I like the sweet chili sauce that came with the lobster spring rolls.

While we were waiting for our food, a gentleman approached our table and ask if we wanted to smoke a “hookah”.  What?!  No thank you, but I saw a couple smoking as we exit out.  Evidently he is the salesperson for selling hookahs to customers for Panda Harlem.

On the bottom of the receipt it reads “A convenience fee of 3.9% is applied to all charge card sales.  As an incentive for customer we now provide an immediate discount of 3.99% when paying with cash”.   Also, they automatically charge a gratuity fee.

Good food and good conversation.  Interesting place.

Lucuma ice cream - $8.00

Finally!   Lorraine, my co-worker and I finally were able to meet for lunch after so many postponements.  Our waiter, John has the most gracious customer service, and at the same time he is professional, helpful, knows the menu, pleasant and has a great personality.

Lorraine and I both ordered the Juanita’s chicken (mines was white meat only), half, salad and saffron rice.  Now.  Where to begin.

Juanita’s chicken is marinated in mama Juanita’s authentic recipe then place on a rotisserie, which you can taste the seasonings, oh the skin is a bit crispy and so good. The salad had slices of avocado on top, tomatoes, onions, mixed greens.  The saffron rice and red beans yep, yep, yep.  Everything was delicious.

Then I had a great idea, dessert. I had the tres leches cake, it was good and I liked it better because it was not overly sweet.  Lorraine had the lucuma ice cream, my great good, delicious!  She had 3 scoops and gave me one, but to tell you the truth, I wanted all 3. I should have ordered my own, but I most definitely will the very next few times or more.  Lucuma is a fruit of the Pouteria lucuma tree that is native to South America.  It grows in high altitudes. It has a hard, green outer shell and a soft yellow flesh with a dry texture and sweet flavor that people compare it to a mix of sweet potato and butterscotch.

What a way to end the month. I have passed this restaurant a few times and it piqued my interest.  My foodie senses would go up. So today was the day that my daughter Brandy and I decided to try it out.  I am so thankful that we did.

Freddie was our waiter and let me tell you he was wonderful, what you would want in every waiter. Attentive at the appropriate time, helpful, pleasant, responsive, knowledgeable with a sense of humor.

For appetizer we ordered pizza.  Nice crust, fresh mozzarella that was delicate with a milk like freshness topped with a pizza sauce that you can taste some of the blended flavors of garlic, oregano, basil, and other herbs that I was too busy eating to decipher.  Bottom line, good. Did I mention that it was cooked in a 600-degree wood stone oven.

Brandy had the chicken parmigiana (she asks for it to be unbreaded), fresh mozzarella and tomato sauce with linguini.  The chicken was well seasoned, tender and juicy not dry and overdone.  It was topped with a creamy mozzarella; sauce was bright & tangy providing a fresh and tasty contrast with the fried cutlet.

I had the chicken marsala, yummy.  The combination of pan-fried chicken, tender, savory mushrooms with a rich dark sauce all brought together with the marsala wine sauce was savory (there’s that word again), sweet and tangy, just the right balance.  Yummy belongs here too.

For dessert I had a slice of Dulce De Leche which was not real sweet as others I have tried and threw away.  I must say, I enjoyed the cake along with the buttercream, super light, mild flavor, all gone!

Jorge the manager stopped by to see how we were doing he was the manager everyone would want.  Hospitable, professional, great conversationalist and wonderful customer service.  Judy the host was very welcoming and lively.  Even the waitress that was just walking by greeted me and the busser who cleared our table was competent, team player and pleasant.

We kind of know what we are going to order on visit number 2.  Three will take care of itself once that time arrives.
