Brussels Sprouts

Spicy tuna on crispy rice

Shrimp linguini

Thursday, June 15, 2023 somewhere around 4:15 pm, with a lovely 70 + degree weather, South Street Seaport cobblestone Fulton Street, east river flowing, overhearing bits of conversations, laughter and giggles, appears The Tuck Room.  As I am advancing towards the third floor to celebrate my friend Twan’s goodbye celebration from the job, I noticed that this place is spacious and has a sort of speakeasy look.  Both the second and third floor have bars, seating and plenty of waitstaff.

Kathy ordered the spicy tuna on crispy rice with seared sushi rice, spicy aioli, scallion, teriyaki glaze, jalapeno and wasabi.  This dish had a nice mild spiciness to it and it was good.  Then there was the crispy  brussels sprouts with miso-tahini dressing, fuji apples topped with parmesan cheese, tasty and I must say, it was a great selection.

Cheryl’s was the shrimp linguini.  The shrimps were grilled, tossed with a pesto cream sauce, pine nut and parmesan cheese, yummy.  All of the dishes had great presentation and were quite filling.  Everyone was sharing their dishes.  Good times was had by all.

Fried catfish, mac n' cheese & yams

Fried whiting, potato salad, collard greens, mac n' cheese, yams & cornbread

My daughter Brandy googled Newark for a soul food restaurant since we were going to be near, and she found Cornbread Farm to Soul.  We liked the name and decided to venture on over.  I am so glad and stomach happy that we did.  Upon entering you receive a “welcome to Cornbread” greeting and the great customer service continues to escalate throughout your dining experience.

Brandy ordered catfish, macaroni and cheese and yams. You must meet Bernice and Natore the waitresses, they are professional, know the menu, make great suggestions and are hilarious. I ordered the fried whiting, potato salad and collard greens.  Now it comes with a triangle shaped cornbread that has corn inside and I had to stop myself from eating it because as you know, you will fill up faster, but who cares, just take off the belt or loosen your pants.  It was just that good.  Now can we talk.  You know how you are eating, and your stomach says that it’s getting full, but you don’t pay it any attention and you keep right on eating.  Yup.  That’s what I did. Everything and I do mean everything was so good, yet we couldn’t finish it all but I gave it the old college try.  I went down fighting for the next fork full.  We took the leftovers and ordered fried chicken breasts for takeout.  Stop it, they need to stop! It bears repeating, so good!  I blame chef Dwayne!!  Chef, chef, chef…. Thank you for putting those ingredients together and that you were willing to share.

Chicken Fajitas - $24.99

I really don’t know where or how to begin.  But then again, yes I do.  I have been to this restaurant for a few years either dining in or doing takeout and have always enjoyed the food and the service.  They are very cordial, professional and friendly.  Today was a completely different story. Upon entering I sat at one end of the bar waiting to have my order placed, but the woman behind the bar/counter ignored me. So, I moved up to the area where the waitstaff pick up their orders. After a while she noticed me and asked me what I wanted while walking away towards the other end of the bar. So I waited until she came back to the area I was sitting.  She asked again and I ordered 2 chicken fajitas for takeout.  Never a smile, hello, nothing, just a glare. Her tone was as if I was bothering her, and her tone was harsh. When I paid for my order, she handed me back my change, minus 2 cents. That’s right, 2 cents.  I asked her about it, and she stated that she did not have it with her back to me. I then told her that I would like my two cents, and I did that only because of her dismissal and nasty attitude towards me.

Normally I would walk out, but I wanted their chicken fajitas. She called over a waitress and said something in Spanish but the only thing I understood was “American”.  A few minutes later the waitress put 2 pennies on the counter in front me and I ask her did they come from her, she walked away.  When she walked towards me again, I repeated my question and handed her the 2 cents and then she placed them on the counter next to me and walked away.  When the person who took my order came back, there was a discussion between her and the waitress, she took the 2 cents and threw them in the garbage can next to me.

My main reason for asking for the 2 pennies was not because I needed it, but because it is not up to the staff to decide to give you your change without telling you no matter the amount, don’t just assume, plus I was annoyed at her. Was I being petty, maybe, but I will never ever step foot in El Porton if she is the person behind the bar/counter.  Ever! But the food was very good as usual.  I’m just saying.
