Tuesday, December 13, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - Happy Hour

My daughter Brandy and I have been hearing about Eddie V’s since they opened at Garden State Plaza, so we decided to visit during their happy hour today.  Happy hour is sitting at the bar and served by our bartender/waitress Chelsea who was very friendly but professional, welcoming, sharp memory, positive attitude, sociable and quite engaging.

We ordered mini fillet sandwiches (2), jumbo lump crab cake, crab fried rice and South African lobster.  Now I must say, we had the most engaging conversation with Desiree who was sitting next to Brandy.  She is such a bright, funny, positive, intelligent and a foodie person!  She has her own food Instagram page (diningwithpyt).  It was such a pleasure meeting her.

We ordered the mini fillet sandwiches center cut filet mignon without the blue cheese.  It was supposed to come with onion jam, but it tasted more like mustard and the filet mignon was a bit bland.   The crab cake was real crab meat, very fresh with spicy chive remoulade and it was indeed very good.  The crab fried rice (real crab meat again) was well seasoned and very good as was the South African lobster tempura bites topped with sriracha aioli, which we ask for it to be on the side.

The inside of Eddie V’s décor is very elegant decorated in earth tones and beautiful art surrounded with a relaxed atmosphere.  Overall, the food was good, loved the ambiance and it’s a place that I will visit again, more than once.

Bacon, scramble eggs with carrot hash brown and sourdough toast - $17.00

Monday, December 12, 2022 @ 11:00 – Brunch time!

I have passed by this restaurant for years and decided it was time to check it out.  So my sister Gwen & I ventured in.  This appears to be a popular place with Columbia students, professors, and other employees, but also people from in and outside of the community.  It’s very welcoming.

Jaime V. was our waiter.  What can I say about Jaime V.  Jaime V. is very polite, has a great smile, active listener, great memory, attentive, positive attitude, and a multi-tasker.

Now the sausage (replaced with heritage hickory bacon, yum), scrambled egg with carrot hash brown & sourdough toast was very good with raspberry jam.  Now let’s talk about the carrot hash brown, you read it right, carrot hash brown, like home fries.  The diced potatoes, shredded carrots, a hint of garlic, pepper, onions and I don’t know what else was added, sauteed, so good.

Good food, nice restaurant and great customer service.  I will return.

After Eva, Altagracia and I left the Clinton Street Baking, I wanted them to experience Economy Candy.  This is NYC’s oldest retail candy shop.  Old time favorites, candy by the pound, single candy bars, all types of candy, nuts and dried fruit from floor to ceiling.  Direct quote from Altagracia “this is a diabetic nightmare”.

Economy candy store started as a shoe and hat repair shop with an outdoor push cart that sold candy.  During the Depression, selling candy brought in more business than the repair shop. Today, the store stocks up on 2,000 + items of their favorites which includes candy that you can’t find anywhere else.

Everyone should experience Economy Candy at least once.  It brings back a lot of childhood memories.  Bubble gum cigarettes, fish, clark bar, cherry sours, mary jane, peanut bars, atomic fireballs, fruit stipe gum, fruit slices, chocolate covered graham crackers (with and without jelly), chocolate covered pretzels, jelly rings, bags of gummies, red string licorice, chunky, astro pop, lemonhead, zagnut bar, violets, sweet tarts, nerds, pez, sugar babies, taffy, get the hint.   Go and take a walk down memory lane.

You know you are going to have a great dinner when you meet up with good people like Ella.  After meeting up with her, we wandered around looking for a place to eat.  We’ll see a restaurant and go, no not this time, not this one, or not feeling it, you understand.  Then we see two restaurants on 6th avenue side by side and go, yep, that’s the one, Shu Han Ju, a Szechuan restaurant, let’s try it.  Yea!

We opened the door and was greeted with a jubilant “welcome, come on in, come in have a seat, table for two” all in one breath.  Such an awesome spirit.  I found out that her name is Bowie and I thought that she was the manager but no she laughed and said, “no I’m the cashier and the busy body”.  Funny.  She stated that she wanted to get to know the people coming in, which she did.  Our waiter Simon was absolutely a great host and very personable.

Let’s see.  Ella ordered egg drop soup, steam dumplings and duck with onion, broccoli & steamed mushrooms.  While eating the soup, Ella stated that it was good, a little oily, balanced and not overly salted, smooth on the tongue and she wish she had more.  This was one of the best egg drop soup that she has tasted.

I on the other hand ordered scallion pancakes and shredded chicken in garlic sauce.  The pancakes were a bit greasy but good and the shredded chicken, yes, yes, yes, yes and another yes!  Touchdown!!  The tenderness of the chicken, the taste of the ginger, Sichuan peppercorn, crisp carrots, garlic, chilies and other ingredients that I couldn’t figure out.  The entire dish was mouthwatering and addictively savory, mildly spicy with a sweet and tangy sauce.  Will I be back, darn right.

Grandma's pizza - $4.00

October 28, 2022 @4:54 pm

For several years I’ve been going to Koronet Pizza because their pizza’s are good, good atmosphere, great customer service.  They are known for their jumbo size pizza.  You should see the jumbo slice.  Now somewhere between April and May of this year I met the owner and I had one no two questions to ask him.  What happened to the seats and is he closing.  He replied no, it’s not closing and he will be replacing the seats in the next few weeks.  It is now November and the seating situation has gotten worst.

There are hardly any seats inside.  There is an island in the middle that has about 5 chairs.  On one side there are two tables and one against the wall that usually has bar stools.  Not there are only 3 out of about bar 18 seats.  That means at 15 are missing seats.  If a pole is missing its top half (seat) you can actually swivel a seat off and place it on another pole, but they can be wobbly and unstable.  Normally my reviews are about the food, but not this time.  I am actually confused and annoyed that the lack of respect and courtesy for the customers.   Customers often judge a restaurant by its appearance, and a poorly maintained restaurant can and will drive customers away.  Yes, restaurants experience furniture wear and tear from continue usage and damage but when it reaches the level that Koronet is now in, it demonstrates a lack of interest or something.  I just don’t get it.  Now we’ve all heard that things are still on ships, back orders, suppliers can’t keep up with demand due to lower production, shipping delays and labor shortages.  I get it.  But there has to be another remedy to reflect appreciation for your customers.

I hope that this will be remedied very soon because I do enjoy sitting inside eating my grandma pizza and reading my book.

3 plates for the pizza.  O plates for the seating.
